ODE TO MIKE “THE BARBER”

There’s a term often used in describing a “collective resource” that being a Captured Audience. That term certainly could be applied to the grooming habits of the young men / boys (particularly in the haircut department) at Angel Guardian Orphanage during the years roughly between 1957 and 1965.
Now, I’m sure that many a young man who had the pleasure of receiving a “Mike” the Barber haircut remembers it well. My memory is a little vague but what stands out vividly in my memory (after all these years) was a man short on words but long on cutting. His “cutting” tool as I recollect was an electric clipper rather than scissors. I suppose that was due to the remote possibility that he was being paid (some unknown amount) per head rather than per hour / day. The motto “get ‘em in, get ‘em out” could have been his with no argument. And no matter what you requested he always gave you the same. Consistency had its place.
The terms “Baldy Sour” and “Scalped” come to mind after short recollection. And due to this farce of male grooming it were only years after leaving the Orphanage that I was able to enjoy and savor the look and feel of a good haircut.
So, Mike “the Barber” wherever you are, I would like to return the favor. Your next haircut is “on the house” and at no charge! Just call 1.800.NO HAIR . . . and thanks for the memories.

P.S.
What ever happened to the following . . .
All the trophies that were collected by the Orphanage throughout the years?
Brother Sean Welsh?
The many pictures archived by the Orphanage throughout the years of its operation?
Fr. John Evans
5 cent Cokes and nickel candy bars?
